It's been a long time, but I finally decided that Barry is right... I should run an open wireless network at home. It's the neighborly thing to do.

However, I don't want to be reckless about it. So I set it up on the outside of my home firewall (a requirement that the pool does not have, since there are no machines that we are trying to protect there).

I invite Barry and other neighbors to be my guest. However, don't be alarmed if the internet looks a little... different. You have to decide for yourself whether to trust the person that runs any particular hot spot, whether it's Holiday Inn, the Brookstone pool, or that crazy neighbor down the street.

Do you have encryption enabled on your home network? Exactly what makes the pool Internet connection any different? Wireless access is not free at Starbucks BTW and McDonalds has much deeper pockets than the Brookstone HOA. A lawsuit from the RIAA is certainly a possibility, they sued 20,000 people last year.

If you do not secure your own wireless Internet connection that is your choice, but the poor policies of the HOA Board affect all of its members.

I really think this alternative web site has sunk to new lows with this one.

Does anyone honestly think the HOA could be sued for having an open WAP? Don't you think McDonald's or Starbucks would be a more lucrative target for a lawsuit? And who would actually be doing the suing? RIAA? BellSouth? A homeowner?

This looks like a sensationalist editor in search of a scandal.

Next up: Dog poops in neighbor's yard... terrorist act?
